Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed her role. The parents of her were not keen to let her perform until she turned an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry stated that she was too timid to perform in high school but began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry managed to get minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. Homesickness, however, caused her to move to California to return, where she started performing on stage. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie alongside her in the year 2015. Perry was in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father portrayed her in her role on the ABC show Scandal. The character she played was a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The role was given to her through audition, despite the fact that she has a family tie with the character.
